Father Kramer broaches an interesting point which I’d not considered before. When Jesus prayed for Peter in Luke 22, 31, he said that the prayer was so that his faith might not fail, and the Church teaches that this is to be understood ‘simpliciter’ that is, that no indubitable Pope can ever lapse into formal, manifest heresy. For this reason, the question of how to deal with an openly heretical Pope was always treated as a hypothesis only, as it was considered impossible that Peter’s successor could ever fall into heresy. Something which occurs to me on this point, however, is that if no Pope can fall into heresy, due to the graces afforded by Christ’s prayer, than that means the Sedevacantists have nothing. Christ’s prayer prevents their interpretation of the current situation from happening. Might be worth thinking over for any sedes or potential sedes out there.
